Magnetics Reader¶
New in version 2.4.0.
This page explains how to use the Magnetics Reader to visualize magnetic diagnostic
geometries from the magnetics IDS.
Supported IDSs¶
The following structures are supported in the Magnetics Reader:
IDS |
Structure |
|---|---|
|
flux_loop, b_field_pol_probe, b_field_phi_probe, rogowski_coil |
Using the Magnetics Reader¶
The Magnetics Reader functions similarly to the GGD Reader, with the same interface and data loading workflow. This means that the steps for loading an URI, an IDS, and selecting attributes are identical. Refer to the GGD Reader for detailed instructions on:
Loading an URI: How to provide the file path or select a dataset.
Loading an IDS: How to load a dataset and display the grid.
Selecting attribute arrays: How to choose and visualize attributes.
Visualized Elements¶
Flux loops and Rogowski coils are visualized as closed polylines representing the wire geometry.
Poloidal and toroidal B-field probes are visualized as arrows indicating the sensor
position and orientation. The length of the arrow can be controlled using the
Probe Arrow Length parameter in the plugin settings.
Note
The flux loop geometry is obtained through linear interpolation between the points stored in the IDS. As a result, the rendered loop may appear to intersect the plasma volume, whereas the physical loop in the machine would typically follow the vessel wall contour between those points.
Plugin Settings¶
The Magnetics Reader exposes the following settings under the Magnetics Reader Settings group:
Probe Arrow Length (m)- Controls the total length of the arrow used to visualize each B-field probe.Extrude Full Flux Loops- When enabled, flux loops that contain only a single position point are extruded into a full toroidal circle at their (R, Z) position. When disabled, they are displayed as a single point.Full Flux Loop Resolution- Controls the number of points used to discretize single-point flux loops, when theExtrude Full Flux Loopsoption is enabled.
Example Case¶
The following figure uses the Magnetics Reader to visualize the geometries of the
flux loops, rogowski coils, and B-field probes of magnetics from the following
machine description NetCDF file: iter_md_magnetics_150100_5.nc.

and toroidal B-field probes (white) from a machine description magnetics IDS.¶
